Toca Race Driver 2 with Wine under Ubuntu Fesity

Sometimes I need to relax and one of the best way is playing…. I like very much race driving games like Toca Race Driver 2 by Codemasters (it was bundled with a newspaper; I bought it for only 10 € !). I tried this game under Windows and now I’ll want to try it in my Ubuntu box. So I installed Wine through Automatix and I configure it. I can suggest to set compatibility to Windows XP and set the correct Audio Driver: use ALSA Driver instead of default OSS Driver and don’t care error messages. Set the default sample rate and default bits per second as in the figure also.
If you prefer you can set windows applications to run in windowed mode : open the Graphics settings tab and flag “Emulate a Virtual Desktop” and set the right size according to your screen resolution (I use 1280×1024 under Ubuntu so I set 1024×768 in Wine).
Now you have to install the game. So insert the dvd, go in the mount directory of your dvd and type this command:
andrea@homerinux:$ wine Installa.exe
(in the snapshot you’ll see Gioca instead Installa cause I made it after installation). Install the game and follow the rest of setup….(and take a pause for about ten minutes) After installation you get the Program menu folder under Apps->Wine->Programs->Toca Race Driver 2
You’re almost ready to play. You need to made the setup of the game (it starts the first time you launch the game otherwise you can find it in the Toca Race Driver program group folder). Some render problems (as you can see in the figure) affect the correct visualization of the cars and the circuit so you have to disable some options in Wine configuration and in the game configuration.
In Wine you have to disable “Allow pixel shader” option in the Graphics tab.
In the game settings ( Apps->Wine->Programs->Toca Race Driver 2->Toca Race driver 2 Configuration-> click on Advanced Settings) you have to set to Off the shadow quality. To play the game with a major fluency without losing in quality I suggest to diable all other options. Apply and in the main settings screen choose the right resolution as you made previously in Wine (in my case 1024×768). Save all settings and launch the game (by the program menu or by the dekstop link).
